A clear path to Becoming a Security Guard in New York
REQUIRED COURSES FOR ALL NYS SECURITY GUARDS
The first step to becoming an New York – NYS Security Guard is to get certified. Below are the general topic courses prescribed by the commissioner and supervised by the NYSDCJS as the only certification courses you need to be eligible for the NYSDOS security guard license.

- 8 Hour Pre-Assignment Training Course in NYC – Classes Online and Offline
- 16 Hour On The Job Training Course (must be taken within the first 90 days of employment)
Security guard training: All of our courses are accredited by The New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services in compliance with the Security Guard Act of 1992
New York State law also dictates that all Armored Car Guard’s must go through an application process which includes among other training 8 Hour Pre-Assignment Training , 16 Hour On The Job Training Course and a background fingerprint check before they can be issued a New York State Security Guard’s License.
Annual Security Guard Training Courses
Your security guard license is valid for 2 years, and to be eligible for renewals you are required to take on an annual basis the 8hrs annual in-service course for security guards in New York – NYC.
This is the only way security guards meet compliance and stay eligible to be renewed after 2 years.
