Changing NY Security Guard Employers: DOS Notification Steps
Quick answer: the employer files the status notice
New York requires security guard employment, retirement, resignation and termination changes to be reported to the Department of State within 15 calendar days. The official Employment Status Notification (DOS-1205-f) is completed and submitted by the employer.
If you are changing security companies
- Give the new employer your correct legal name and security guard UID.
- Ask the employer to confirm it will submit the required hiring notice.
- Your former employer is responsible for its termination/resignation reporting.
- Keep copies of any confirmation supplied to you.
- Check your license status separately; changing employers does not replace renewal or training obligations.
The current state form says a separately filed hiring report carries a $25 fee per guard; there is no fee for reporting retirement, resignation or termination. The employer should check the current form before filing.
