Important Steps to Handling Hazardous Materials for Security Guards

The procedure for handling a hazardous materials spill as a security guard in New York will depend on the specific circumstances of the spill and the type of hazardous material involved. In general, the following steps should be taken:

  1. Stay calm and take immediate action to protect yourself and others.
  2. Evacuate the area if necessary and alert others to do the same.
  3. If the hazardous material is on fire, call 911 and report the fire.

  5. Follow the instructions provided by the National Response Center or other emergency response personnel.

  7. If the hazardous material is not a chemical, follow the appropriate emergency response guidelines for the type of material involved.
  8. Do not touch or try to clean up the spill unless you have been trained and are equipped to do so safely.
  9. Secure the area and do not allow anyone to enter unless they are properly trained and equipped to handle hazardous materials.
  10. Document the spill and any actions taken in accordance with company policies and procedures.
